captive bred fox in an illegal state?
Generally they are euthanized. That was what lied ahead for five week old Bashful after
being abandoned at a hotel in Wyoming. Desperate to save this little life the animal
control team in Gillette, Wyoming reached out to Walking Wild. With just 48 hours before this little kit would have to be euthanized time was of the essence. We were on a plane 18 hours later to bring this little man home to Walking Wild and save his life.
Bashful is such a sweet little fox. He loves to play, snuggle and go on adventures. He is quick to steal the hearts of all who meet him. Bashful’s story is not uncommon. Many
people get a fox without doing the research into the laws of their state and local
ordinances. Some states, like Wyoming, may appear to be legal, however no captive bred fox is allowed to be imported into the state. Because of this there are no red fox breeders, making any captive bred red fox illegal.
Wyoming’s neighbor, South Dakota, is fox friendly which is where animal control believes Bashful was purchased. Many times people will purchase a fox in a legal state and bring it over state lines hoping they will never get caught. This only puts the animals life in danger.

This unique little boy had a rough start to life. Zazu was born to be a pet. The person that bred him abused and mistreated him as a very young kit. A young man saw how Zazu was being mistreated and stepped in. Zazu’s breeder agreed to let the young man have Zazu, however he didn’t get any of the legal permit information needed. Every state where owning a fox is legal has different laws about permits and licensing needed. Without this paperwork a fox is considered illegal and runs the risk of being euthanized. Zazu’s owners were no longer able to keep him, but without any permit for him, Zazu could not be taken by anyone as owning an illegal animal can result in a potential fine and loosing your permit. In addition, the animal can lose its life.
Zazu’s family contacted us about helping. We were happy to help and worked with our wonderful wildlife officer and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to make Zazu legal. ODNR agreed to make Zazu a
legal resident of the Buckeye state once we obtained custody of him. Now at Walking Wild, Zazu no longer has to stay shut up in a house being hid from the world, is able to receive medical care for the first time and is no longer at risk of losing his life.

Ida was purchased at just four weeks old to be a pet. After bringing Ida home, life
circumstances began changing for her family and Ida found herself living in a small dog cage. In her cage she would get carried
outside a few times a week so that she could get fresh air, and then back to the laundry room she went. Recognizing that this was not a good life for Ida, her family reached out to Walking Wild about giving her the life that she needed. A life full of space to play and the attention that she so desperately wanted.
We were honored to be able to give Ida a new life where she is a priority. This sweet and shy little fox didn’t take long to seek affection as she began to realize that she was no longer an after thought, but a loved
member of the Walking Wild family. Now with room to run and play Ida is able to be the silly and active fox that she was born to be. We are so appreciative that Ida’s first family realized that she deserved so much more than they were able to give and are honored to be able to give Ida the best life!

Sven was purchased by a couple in Illinois from a fur farm in Missouri as a kit. Sven was purchased by the wife, but a few months later the wife left her husband and Sven behind. Not wanting the fox, the husband locked Sven in a small cage outside in the beating sun and starved him by only feeding him once or twice a week. A good Samaritan found out about Sven and asked if he would let her take him. He agreed and she picked him up the next day. Not prepared for a fox or able to care for it, but knowing she had to save this little fox, the good Samaritan reached out to Walking Wild about giving Sven the home he so desperately needed.
With the help of volunteer pilots Sven made the life saving journey from Illinois to Walking Wild. Now able to run, play and know what a full belly feels like, Sven has begun to heal. When he arrived Sven had weak back legs, from never being able to use them to run. With the space to exercise, Sven is slowly learning how to use his back legs.
Stories like Sven’s are all too common and sadly not every fox finds their happily ever after like Sven. We are so honored to be able to give Sven the life of love, freedom he deserves!

Just like with any animal there are breeders that love their animals and those that see dollar signs. Little Mo was purchased by a loving family from a dollar sign breeder at a flea market. The breeder sold Mo to his family lying to them about it being legal to own a captive bred red fox in their state. After purchasing Mo his family tried to obtain a permit for him, only to find out they would not be able to get one and MO was not allowed to remain in the state. Knowing that staying with them meant that MO would not be able to receive medical care and could be euthanized, they made the hard and right choice to reach out to us about providing MO with a safe and loving home. We were honored to continue showering this little fox with love and welcome him to the Walking Wild family! Stories like this, unfortunately, are way to common. This is why it is so important to check with your local DNR or wildlife officer before bringing any exotic animal home.

Kristoff found his way to Walking Wild after the breeder that had him decided that it was time to reduce the number of foxes they had. Kristoff was one of the foxes they decided would be better off finding a new place to live. At 4 years old Kristoff has been through a lot of trauma in his life and the breeders felt that he would do best in a rescue environment where he can be loved, respected and appreciated just for who he is. For those of you that wondered about if Kristoff has ears or not, the answer is he does not have ears. His ears were actually taken off by another Fox a few years ago. He will be going to the vet in the next few weeks for his exam and vaccines. At this time we will be having his ears thoroughly checked as there's barely an opening to his ear canals. Kristoff is a pale blue shadow Arctic. We're so excited to be able to give Kristoff an amazing and loving forever home where he doesn't have to do anything but be himself.

Mowgli was purchased to be a loved member of a family. Sharing your life with any animal is a big commitment. Mowgli's family between crazy work schedules and preparing to move, didn't have the time to dedicate to him that he needed. Because of this Mowgli resorted to making his own fun by learning to be an escape artist. This activity of his ended up resulting in him repeatedly injuring his front left foot to the point that he chewed off two of his toes. Mowgli, along with the other fox that his family owned, Anna, were in need of a new home where they would be a priority. Recognizing this, his family reached out to Walking Wild about providing him with that home. Mowgli is now a priority, has stopped injuring and self mutilating himself and is living his best life! We are so honored to be able to give Mowgli the home and love that he needs.

No animal should have to live in pain, but poor little Baloo was. At under 5 months old, this sweet little captive-bred fox kit was abandoned and left wandering a neighborhood in pain. With a severely fractured leg, little Baloo hobbled onto the front porch of a home to find a little comfort by curling up for a nap on the front doormat. That choice ended up saving his life as that porch belonged to an animal loving family that quickly called Walking Wild to come and help this sweet little boy. The initial thought was that Baloo had been struck by a car, as neighborhood cameras showed him whimpering and cowering under a car for hours, but x-rays showed that his broken leg had been that way for months. Because of this and the location of the break, getting Baloo all healed wasn’t going to be quick. He needed surgery from an orthopedic specialist and months of physical therapy, but Baloo is now on the mend. This little fox, despite all the cruelty and pain he experienced is one of the sweetest foxes. He loves nothing more than giving and getting kisses and snuggling up as close as he can. Although we will never know all the pain this little kit lived through, we know that his future is pain free and filled with love and joy.

because they are a fox. Although captive bred fox are not wild animals, they need
people to survive. Although not wild, a captive bred fox is still nothing like a dog or cat. They require specialized care, lots of time, understanding and financial resources. This beautiful little girl captivated the family that purchased her, but although sweet and beautiful, having a fox was more than her family could handle so Shanti needed a new place to call home. Thanks to a volunteer pilot, Shanti made her way from Florida to her new happily ever after at Walking Wild.
Shanti is such a sweet girl. She has a very calm demeanor, but loves to play with her best buddies Baloo and Mowgli and give them a run for their money. Shanti loves to show her Walking Wild rescuers just how much they mean to her by grooming them and showering them with kisses. This unique little girl is now living her best life where her needs are met and she is a priority every day!

Aladdin was bred to be sold to the highest bidder. With no care for what his future held, he along with is buddy Jasmine were auctioned off as a breeding pair at just two weeks old to whoever would pay top dollar. Auctions like this happen all over the country and are legal. Many of the foxes auctioned off are fur farm kits that are not usable or have mom’s that are not wanting to nurse. Others are born to be sold as pets and an auction is a way to make more money. Most people that purchase a fox at an auction do it as an impulse buy and are not prepared for sharing their lives with one of these unique animals. Luckily Aladdin ended up with a family, that although they couldn’t continue caring for his and Jasmine’s needs, made the choice to surrender them to Walking Wild.
Now at Walking Wild Aladdin is living his best life with his BFF Jasmine and enjoying the freedoms and joys of being a fox. With all of his needs met Aladdin has nothing to worry about other than which toy should he play with today and which treat is going to be his favorite. Aladdin is such a sweet and mature soul and we are honored to give him his happily ever after.

Sadly in many US states fox, along with countless other exotic animals are sold at auctions to the highest bidder without a care for where they go. Jasmine along with her best buddy Aladdin were purchased from one of those auctions as a breeding pair of silver fox. The person that purchased these little kits wasn’t sure if she was going to breed them or not. Before that time arrived, when Jasmine and Aladdin were just four months old, life for their family became too hectic and their needs were no longer able to be cared for. Knowing that these two need a place to go where they could thrive, both of them were surrendered to Walking Wild.
Jasmine is one of the happiest foxes. You can be gone for five minutes and she will jump up into your arms like it has been years since she saw you last. She loves to play with anyone and anything that is up for a fast game of chase and loves to cuddle when playtime is done. Jasmine and Aladdin are still together, but will not be breeding. As a rescue we do not breed any of our animals. Jasmine is a one-of-a-kind little fox and we are honored to be able to give her the best life.

Did you know that there are businesses that purchase kits from fur farms and backyard breeders to turn around and sell for profit? These businesses have a big draw for people because they usually have a wide variety of types of fox and colors and are easy for people to purchase from. Gaston was purchased from one of these businesses, luckily by a loving family that only wanted the best for him. Having any animal is expensive if you are giving them all the proper medical care, diet and enrichment, but a fox even more so. Sadly, the pandemic and life hit Gaston’s family hard and they were no longer able to afford to care for him or give him the time he needed. That is when they called Walking Wild.
Here at Walking Wild we were honored to give Gaston a great life. Gaston loves other animal friends and can be timid around people if he doesn’t have a furry buddy by his side. Gaston is thriving with his three best buddies, Caulette, Paulette and Laurette and loving life. He is such a goofy little fox and there isn’t anything he won’t do for an egg. Gaston is living his best life and loving every second of it.

Did you know that all around the country there are exotic animal auctions held? Depending on the state and what animals are legal to own you can find everything from fox, kangaroo, Zebra, Elk, Capybara, African Porcupines and so many other unique animals. Sadly, most of these auctions are a melting pot for animal cruelty with overcrowded filthy cages, unsanitary environments and backyard breeders. At these auctions a person’s ability to care for the animal or a care for where the animal goes is of no concern. All that matters is who is the highest bidder and sometimes that’s a fur farmer. Animals are tossed around in cages with no regards for the fact that they are a living thing. This horrific practice is so common in some areas that people don’t blink an eye.
In Ohio we have a large exotic animal auction in Millersburgh held three times a year. Here you can find all of the above animals three times a year and so many more. This heartbreaking scene is where beautiful miss Caulette was when Walking Wild rescued her and her two other litter mates, Paulette and Laurette. These beautiful girls were being auction off to the highest bidder without a care for where they ended up. To ensure that these sweet girls didn’t up in the fur trade we stepped in and saved their lives. Now at Walking Wild Caulette and her sisters are living their best life full of love, freedom and respect. Their story will be used to help bring an end to these horrific places and shed light on a dark and cruel practice.

They do not make a much happier fox than miss Alie. Alice has a very sad story though. At around 8 months old Alice was abandoned by her family. Not being a wild animal Alice had no idea how to survive, so she found a nearby neighborhood and started looking for scraps and eating from bird feeders. She began approaching people looking for attention, food and help. Alamring to most people at first, a few neighbors realized that this little girl was wearinga collar. Trying to find where this little one belonged they began reaching out. They found who they believed she had been abandoned by, but they never got back to the never came looking for Alice or returned any calls or messages. After over a month of living on hte streets, the neighbors that had been looking after her and providing her with food called Walking Wild. A little boy that Alice had befriended was able to get a leash on her and we rushed over to get her. Underweight, covered in fleas and ticks and walking with a limp, Alice arrived in safety at Walking wild beyond happy to have people to love on her and care for her again! Captive bred fox are not wild animals and Alice is a perfect example of that.
